Bobrisky’s Courtroom Revelation: Unveiling Gender Identity Amid Legal Proceedings
1 min readIn court on Friday, April 12, 2024, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the prominent Nigerian socialite who has long presented herself as a woman, made a startling declaration during her sentencing, stating, “I am a man.”
This revelation unfolded amidst legal proceedings following her arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for naira mutilation. Despite additional accusations of money laundering, the court dismissed these charges.
When questioned by Justice Abimbola Awogboro about her gender identity, Bobrisky’s response, “I am a man,” shed light on the challenges faced by transgender individuals within the Nigerian judicial system.
Ultimately, the judge sentenced Bobrisky to six months in prison without the option of a fine for abusing the naira, with the term beginning on March 24, 2024.
During her plea, Bobrisky expressed remorse and requested leniency, vowing to utilize her platform to educate the public about the repercussions of such actions. However, the judge emphasized that ignorance of the law could not justify the offense.
