Protest: Nigeria’s Survival Impossible on 4,000 MW, Says Ajaero

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, has emphasized that the nation cannot sustain itself with a mere 4,000 megawatts of electricity.
Ajaero made this assertion at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission headquarters, where organized labor is presently demonstrating against the proposed electricity tariff hike.
The NLC President also challenged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to disclose to the public which power plant it intends to construct before the year’s end, highlighting that the Mambilla plant could potentially generate over 3,600 MW if operational.
Furthermore, he criticized NERC’s practice of charging tariffs without ensuring adequate availability and accessibility of electricity, accusing the Commission of contributing to inflation while continuing to bill Nigerians.
Ajaero urged the Federal Government not only to reverse the planned tariff increase but also to eliminate any taxes that could further impoverish the populace.
It’s worth noting that NERC announced the tariff hike for Band A customers during a press briefing in Abuja on April 3, stating that affected consumers would now pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant rise from the previous rate of N68/kWh, constituting a 240 percent increase.
