Paris to Honor Slain Ugandan Marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei with Sports Venue Dedication Following Tragic Attack

Paris will honor Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically died in a violent attack in Kenya, by naming a sports venue after her. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced this tribute to commemorate Cheptegei’s legacy and emphasize the values of equality upheld by the Olympics. Cheptegei, who had competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, was killed when her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, set her on fire at her home in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County.

Paris will honor the memory of Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei by dedicating a sports venue in her name. Mayor Anne Hidalgo emphasized that this tribute will preserve her legacy and promote the values of equality championed by the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Paris will not forget her. We’ll dedicate a sports venue to her so that her memory and her story remain with us, helping to advance the message of equality,” Hidalgo said.

Hidalgo also highlighted Cheptegei’s impact, stating, “She dazzled us here in Paris. We witnessed her beauty, strength, and freedom. It is likely that these very qualities were intolerable to the person who committed this horrific act.”

Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she finished in 44th place. Tragically, she was attacked by her Kenyan partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, on Sunday, suffering severe injuries. According to police and medical reports, Cheptegei was left with 80 percent burns from the attack, which occurred in front of her children.
