Federal Government Implements Ban on Smoking and Money Ritual Depiction in Nollywood Productions

Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has revealed that the Federal Government has sanctioned the prohibition of money rituals and the glamorization of vices in Nigerian films.
This development was announced during a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood convened in Enugu. The event, jointly organized by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), saw the participation of movie producers, directors, actors, as well as leaders of various guilds and associations within the Nigerian film industry.
Husseini emphasized the urgency of the situation, describing it as an industry emergency requiring decisive actions from all stakeholders. He recounted discussions with the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, wherein the need for subsidiary legislation to regulate smoking depiction in Nigerian movies was raised. Subsequently, the scope was expanded to include prohibitions on money rituals, ritual killings, and the glamorization of crimes.
Announcing the regulatory measures, Husseini stated that the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has approved the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion, and Glamorization Display in Movies, Musical Videos, and Skits Regulations 2024. The approval has been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette publication, signaling the official enforcement of the ban.
