Federal Government Calls Meeting Amidst Labour Threats of Indefinite Protest Over Electricity Tariff Hike

The Federal Government is set to convene a crucial meeting next week to address the demands put forth by organized labor regarding the restoration of power subsidies and the rollback of increased electricity tariffs. This decision comes in the wake of disruptive protests staged by labor unions at the Ministry of Power in Abuja, prompting the government to take action.
In response to the protests, the Ministry of Power’s spokesperson, Mrs. Florence Eke, revealed the government’s plan to engage in comprehensive discussions with all relevant stakeholders. She emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and assured that concerns regarding insufficient consultation prior to implementing tariff adjustments would be addressed during the upcoming stakeholder meeting.
Despite the government’s proactive stance, organized labor remains steadfast in its stance, threatening to escalate protests indefinitely if the tariff hike is not reversed promptly. Labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, have issued ultimatums to the government, signaling their readiness to take further action if their demands are not met.
The nationwide protests were sparked by the government’s decision to raise electricity tariffs and eliminate subsidies in the power sector. The tariff hike, announced by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), led to a significant increase in costs for Band A customers, constituting approximately 15% of total power consumers nationwide.
While the government argues that the tariff adjustment is necessary to save costs and improve power supply, labor unions contend that it exacerbates the financial burden on Nigerians already grappling with economic challenges. They argue for a fair distribution of electricity and demand greater transparency and accountability from regulatory bodies like NERC.
In response to labor’s grievances, the NERC chairman, Sanusi Garba, pledged to reconsider the demands and reassess the impact of the tariff hike. However, protesters remain skeptical, insisting on a complete reversal of the electricity tariff hike.
The protests have disrupted operations at various power-related institutions across the country, with labor unions vowing to intensify their actions until their demands are met.
