Federal Government Issues Warning to Power Sector Saboteurs as Electricity Generation Surges to 4,800MW

The Federal Government has announced a significant increase in Nigeria’s electricity generation, reaching 4,800 megawatts, up from around 3,500 in March. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this revelation during the launch of a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation in Ajah, Lagos State, implemented under Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative in collaboration with Siemens Energy.
Adelabu attributed the recent surge in power generation to the commencement of operations at the Zungeru hydroelectric power plant, which added 625MW to the national grid. He emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving a target of 6,000MW before the year’s end, highlighting ongoing efforts to settle outstanding debts owed to generating companies and gas suppliers.
Addressing concerns about vested interests hindering progress in the power sector, Adelabu urged these “cartels and cabals” to reconsider their stance, emphasizing the abundant opportunities available in the sector. He dismissed the notion that stabilizing the power sector would harm anyone’s business interests, asserting that it is a dynamic industry with ample room for growth and adaptation.
While not naming specific individuals or groups, Adelabu called on those involved in obstructing progress to join efforts toward transforming the sector for the benefit of all. He stressed the importance of reliable electricity in unlocking Nigeria’s vast potential, underscoring the government’s determination to overcome resistance and achieve its objectives.
Kenny Anuwe, Managing Director of the FGN Power Company, highlighted the significance of the mobile substations in enhancing transmission capacity and improving electricity access across key economic hubs. He emphasized their role in alleviating transmission constraints and facilitating quick deployment to meet growing energy demands.
The commissioning of the Ajah Mobile Substation represents a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize and expand its power infrastructure, with similar initiatives underway in locations such as Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. These efforts aim to enhance transmission capacity, ultimately leading to improved electricity provision for households and businesses nationwide.
