NADDC’s Initiative: Validating Standards for Electric and CNG Vehicle Maintenance

2 min read

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has unveiled plans to authenticate its National Occupational Standards for the conversion and upkeep of electric vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. This announcement was made by Joseph Osanipin, the Director-General of NADDC, during the validation workshop for the draft national standards for autogas vehicles in Nasarawa.

The primary objective of the workshop is to create a blueprint for skills development and standardized operational procedures in the conversion, calibration, and maintenance of these innovative automotive energy sources. Osanipin highlighted that this initiative aligns with the government’s renewed hope agenda and, upon approval by the National Assembly, is expected to spur job creation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish more CNG gas stations in Abuja.

Osanipin emphasized the potential impact of achieving the government’s goals for autogas, stating that it would reduce dependence on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel, addressing environmental concerns while simultaneously generating employment opportunities and wealth for the nation.

The workshop’s significance lies in capturing the input of all relevant stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive national document. Osanipin stressed that adhering to international best practices would result in a document meeting global standards, thereby propelling the automotive sector towards international benchmarks.

Underlining the importance of the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan 2023–2033, Osanipin reaffirmed its significance. The plan, relaunched by the Federal Government in 2023, aims to rejuvenate the automotive industry by fostering sustainable growth through technological advancements and skills development. NADDC’s initiative plays a pivotal role in supporting and advancing this overarching plan, contributing to the nation’s progress in the automotive sector.
