Head coach of Nigeria’s male cricket team and high-performance manager of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Steve Tikolo, expresses confidence in both the male and female teams as they enter strong groups for the debut of cricket at the 13th African Games in Ghana. The tournament, featuring seven ICC Associate member countries and two full ICC members, is set to unfold at the Achimota Cricket Grounds on Thursday, with Nigeria looking to surprise opponents in their respective groups.
In the women’s event starting Thursday, the Female Yellow Greens find themselves in Group A alongside South Africa, Namibia, and Tanzania—teams they encountered twice in the recent Lagos tournament. Meanwhile, the Yellow Greens, positioned in Group B, will face Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Despite being the least-ranked teams in their groups, Tikolo remains optimistic about their chances, emphasizing thorough preparation during training camps.
Speaking from the TBS Oval in Lagos, Tikolo stated, “Our group is strong, with tough opponents like Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Tanzania. However, with our best efforts, victory is within reach. The female team, having had a pre-Games tournament, is equally well-prepared.”
The Female Yellow Greens, fresh from finishing second at the NCF Women’s T20i invitational tournament, arrived in Accra on Tuesday. Following a successful training session at the TBS Oval on Monday, the team gears up for their first game against Tanzania on March 7, followed by challenging encounters against Namibia and South Africa, ranked 17th and 5th in the world, respectively.
