The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday screened renowned economist and tax expert Taiwo Oyedele for the position of Minister of State for Finance following his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The screening took place during plenary at the National Assembly, where lawmakers questioned the nominee about his experience, qualifications, and vision for Nigeria’s financial sector. The nomination letter from the president was earlier read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, formally requesting the Senate to consider and confirm Oyedele in line with constitutional requirements.
Oyedele, who currently serves as the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, is widely known for his work on tax policy and public finance. Under his leadership, the committee has been working on major reforms aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s tax system, improving revenue generation, and creating a more efficient fiscal framework for the country.
Before his involvement in government policy, Oyedele built a strong reputation in the private sector, particularly during his time at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. With over two decades of experience in taxation, fiscal strategy, and economic advisory, he is regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading experts in tax reform and financial policy.
If confirmed by the Senate, Oyedele is expected to play a key role in supporting the administration’s ongoing economic and fiscal reforms, particularly as the government seeks to boost revenue, streamline tax processes, and strengthen public finance management.
