Presidency Denies Claims of France Taking Over Nigeria’s Mining Sector, Clarifies MOU Details
The Presidency has refuted claims circulating on social media that France is taking over Nigeria’s mining sector, solid minerals, or security rights. This follows speculation sparked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed during President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to France. The MOU, which aims to foster joint projects in the critical minerals value chain, focuses on diversifying and developing the solid minerals sector in both countries.
Despite the MOU’s intentions, there was online speculation that France was planning to take control of Nigeria’s mining resources. In response, Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, issued a statement on Thursday clarifying that Nigeria had not surrendered its mining rights. He emphasized that the MOU did not imply any agreement that would compromise Nigeria’s economic or security interests.
Dare explained that the MOU primarily covers cooperation in research, training, and the exchange of knowledge and skills, with a focus on critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements, all of which are vital for clean energy technologies. He further stated that both countries are committed to promoting sustainable mining practices, reducing environmental impacts, and executing joint projects to diversify and secure the supply of critical minerals.
Additionally, the MOU includes plans to address the environmental consequences of mining, such as carbon emissions and water consumption, and aims to improve the conditions of communities affected by mining activities. The agreement also envisions the remediation of over 2,000 abandoned mining pits in Nigeria, alongside initiatives to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in the critical metals sector through training, seminars, and other events.
Dare reassured the public that Nigeria would adhere to international best practices in the execution of these projects, with a focus on transparency and improving the livelihoods of local communities impacted by mining operations.
