US Ambassador to Nigeria Praises Sokoto Governor’s 9-Point Agenda During Visit
The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jnr, has commended the 9-point agenda of Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, describing it as a comprehensive plan that addresses critical areas such as security, education, and youth empowerment. Ambassador Mills made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the Governor’s office in Sokoto on Thursday.
During the visit, Mills expressed his admiration for the Governor’s priorities and shared his intention to explore further areas of collaboration between the US and Sokoto State. He noted that the agenda touches upon key sectors that are vital to the state’s development and well-being, particularly in the realms of security and education.
Ambassador Mills also took the opportunity to assess the impact of US programs in Sokoto, emphasizing the importance of the state both politically and religiously within Nigeria. He acknowledged the positive influence of initiatives such as USAID, which have supported the state in areas like healthcare, youth empowerment, education, and humanitarian efforts.
Governor Aliyu, in his response, thanked the US Government for its support through various initiatives, particularly those from USAID, which have had a significant impact on the lives of Sokoto’s citizens. He reiterated the importance of continued US support in these key areas.
The Governor also provided an update on his administration’s efforts to improve the state’s infrastructure, healthcare, water supply, education, and security. He highlighted initiatives such as the distribution of 130 patrol vehicles to security agencies, the creation of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps, and the procurement of additional patrol vehicles and motorcycles for enhanced security operations. Aliyu also mentioned the progress in establishing an Air Force Base in the state.
Regarding the issue of state police, Governor Aliyu shared that discussions are ongoing between the federal and state governments to establish a framework for its implementation. He also addressed the recent EndBadGovernance protests, acknowledging that while the initiative began with genuine intent, it was later hijacked by opposition groups and hoodlums, leading to violence.
In conclusion, Governor Aliyu thanked Ambassador Mills for his visit and expressed his hopes for continued collaboration and support from the US Government.
