Ruben Amorim Calls for Patience After Manchester United’s Draw at Ipswich, Emphasizing the Need for Time to Implement Changes

Speaking at his post-match press conference on Sunday, Amorim appealed to the club’s supporters for patience, emphasizing that significant changes were underway, and that it would take time for the squad to adapt to his methods.
“It’s frustrating for the fans, I understand that,” Amorim said. “But we are undergoing many changes, and with so many games ahead, we will endure some difficult moments. We could have won against Ipswich, but we were also fortunate not to lose, thanks to Onana’s performance. We must keep in mind that the players had only two days to train under my system, and it’s hard to implement everything in such a short time.”
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Amorim highlighted the need for improvement in both tactical understanding and physicality. “It’s a tough league, and you realize that quickly. The players were overthinking during the game, not just with the ball but in their positioning. It’s challenging with only two days of training. In the first half, we lacked the physicality we needed. You could see the players were tentative. Hutchinson was often in spaces that didn’t help, and Jonny Evans wasn’t pressing his man effectively. Without sufficient training time, it’s difficult to communicate and adjust on the fly. The players want to improve, but they’re still figuring out how to execute the system. That’s the feeling I had.”
Amorim also shared his observations about individual players, noting the importance of discovering their strengths. “Garnacho can hold the ball between the lines, which is something we’ve learned from watching him. Bruno Fernandes also improved by staying closer to the ball, allowing him to make long passes. But we can’t always rely on him to make those passes every time. These are things we’ll keep working on as we get more time with the team.”
Despite United’s strong start, with Marcus Rashford scoring less than two minutes into the match, Ipswich quickly regained control, dominating possession and creating opportunities. Their persistence paid off when Omari Hutchinson equalized with a deflected shot from Noussair Mazrouai.
One area that raised concern was the team’s physical output. United covered just 102 km during the game, their second-lowest distance of the season. Amorim acknowledged this, stating, “We need to analyze the data, understand what’s happening, and improve physically to cope with high pressure and the demands of high-speed running. We will need time to address these aspects.”
