National Power Grid Faces Partial Collapse on November 5, 2024
1 min readThe National Grid experienced a significant power disruption on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, after losing power generation at approximately 1:39 pm. At 1 pm, power generation had been at 2,711 megawatts, down from an earlier peak of 3,631 MW. The grid had also seen a high of 3,934.77 MW around 6 am that same day.
Between 2 pm and 3 pm, the grid’s generation fell to zero, with a reported loss of 0.00 MW during that period. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the grid experienced a “partial disturbance” at around 1:52 pm, which was attributed to a series of line and generator failures that caused instability within the system.
According to TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, some parts of the grid remained unaffected by the power disruption. “Our engineers are already working to restore bulk power supply to the areas impacted by the partial disturbance,” Mbah stated.
By 2:49 pm, power had been fully restored to Abuja, and efforts were underway to gradually bring back supply to other parts of the country. TCN expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to customers during the power outage.
The national grid has faced recurring challenges in recent years, with instability and generation shortfalls contributing to regular power disruptions across Nigeria.
