Gideon Akaa, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Benue State, has addressed the ongoing negotiations regarding the new minimum wage between labor leaders and the state government. In a recent telephone conversation with journalists, Akaa dismissed rumors circulating on social media that the government had proposed a new minimum wage of N40,000.

Akaa clarified that both parties have not reached any agreement on the wage amount. He emphasized that during their discussions, labor representatives had presented figures of N75,000 and N77,000 as potential new minimum wages.

“I’m not aware of the rumor of N40,000. We held a meeting with the government and the negotiation is still ongoing. Nobody has mentioned anything about N40,000 to the best of my knowledge,” Akaa stated.

He reiterated that the negotiation process is still active and that various figures are under consideration, but no consensus has been reached. “The government has not agreed to pay any amount; we are still negotiating. Once the negotiation is concluded, we will sign an agreement,” he added.

Akaa’s comments aim to clarify the current status of wage negotiations and to dispel any misinformation regarding the proposed amounts, assuring that discussions are ongoing and that labor leaders are advocating for fair compensation for workers in the state.
