China Introduces Comprehensive Guidelines to Combat Obesity and Promote Healthy Lifestyles

1 min read

China’s National Health Commission has introduced its first guidelines aimed at standardizing the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, addressing the rising rates of overweight and obesity in the country.

According to the commission, obesity is classified as an independent disease and a significant contributor to various chronic health issues, making it a pressing public health concern in China. It currently ranks as the sixth leading risk factor for death and disability in the nation.

The new guidelines offer comprehensive recommendations for clinical nutrition, medication therapy, surgical options, and behavioral and psychological interventions to effectively tackle obesity.

Additional regulations within the guidelines include exercise interventions for obesity, aiming to enhance the safety and quality of medical care while safeguarding patients’ health rights, according to Zhang Zhongtao, the director of the guideline drafting committee.

Experts emphasize that the majority of overweight and obesity cases stem from unhealthy lifestyle choices.

The key solution lies in adopting a healthy lifestyle, which encompasses a balanced diet and regular exercise to help maintain weight within a healthy range.
