INEC Edo Refutes Allegations of Obstruction, Confirms Scheduled Inspection of Election Materials

In a statement released in Benin on Wednesday, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, described the allegations made by the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, as baseless, misleading, and untrue. The PDP had accused INEC of failing to comply with a court order permitting the inspection of the election materials.

He responded to allegations suggesting that he denied political parties and their representatives access to inspect the BVAS devices and other materials used in the recent elections. Onuoha emphasized that these claims are unfounded, misleading, and entirely false.
Dr. Anugbum Onuoha reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and integrity in electoral processes under his leadership in Edo State. He emphasized that the inspection of election materials is a fundamental right for all political parties involved in election petitions and a legal obligation for INEC to facilitate. Onuoha clarified that neither he nor any officials in his office have ever obstructed or denied access to these materials for any political party or their representatives. He stated, “INEC is fully aware of the legal implications of such actions and is dedicated to supporting the lawful processes that allow parties to seek redress in the courts.”
Dr. Anugbum Onuoha announced that, in line with INEC’s commitment to transparency, the inspection of election materials, including BVAS devices, is formally scheduled for Wednesday at the INEC Headquarters in Benin. He invited all political parties and their representatives to participate in this process, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal procedures to ensure transparency and uphold the rule of law. Onuoha assured that political parties and candidates would have unhindered access to the materials, provided they follow the proper procedures established by the election petition tribunal and relevant legal frameworks. He expressed disappointment that unfounded accusations had been made without evidence or proper communication with his office.
Dr. Anugbum Onuoha urged all stakeholders and the public to dismiss any misinformation circulating regarding INEC’s actions. He affirmed that the Commission’s loyalty lies with the Nigerian people, the Constitution, and the rule of law. “INEC stands for transparency, and we are fully committed to ensuring that the electoral process is free, fair, and accountable,” he stated. Onuoha also encouraged political parties wishing to discuss the inspection of materials to engage with his office through the appropriate legal channels.
