Governor Fubara Vows Accountability for Attacks on Local Government Secretariats Amid New Appointments and Calls for Collaboration

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has pledged to take strong measures against those responsible for the burning of three local government secretariats in the state on Monday.
He assured that this incident, unlike previous ones, will not go unaddressed, as his administration will work with security agencies to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable.
Governor Fubara made this statement during the swearing-in ceremony for four new
commissioners at the Executive Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The governor addressed the audience, recalling his earlier warnings to the new council chairmen about potential attacks. He praised his supporters for their composure amid the recent violent confrontations. Regretting that the ongoing political crisis has diverted attention from his administration’s successes, he announced plans to dedicate a day later this month to showcase these achievements.
In his address to the newly appointed commissioners, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of collaboration to drive the country’s progress amid ongoing socio-economic challenges. He urged them to work closely with him in addressing these issues.
He highlighted the necessity of boosting oil production by addressing the problem of crude oil theft.
Regarding the appointment of additional commissioners, Governor Fubara clarified that his choices were made with careful consideration to ensure loyalty and dedication, while also maintaining political balance across different regions. Among the newly appointed commissioners is Otamiri John-Ngubo, the former Caretaker Committee Chairman and APP Chairmanship candidate for Etche, who, unlike his counterparts in other local government areas, was not able to secure the position.
Also appointed is Evans Bipi, the former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogu/Bolo, known for his involvement in the 2013 brawl at the Rivers State House of Assembly during his tenure as a lawmaker. Joining him are former State Lawmaker Benibo Alabraba and Israel Lebura-Ngbuelu. Governor Fubara reiterated his commitment to holding the arsonists accountable following attacks on two local government secretariats on Monday.
Both the Ikwere and Emohua Local Government Council secretariats were set on fire yesterday after the commissioner of police, Kayode Egbetokun, withdrew police officers assigned to secure the 23 council secretariats. This situation has escalated into widespread unrest, marked by blame and counter-blame. In response, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Nigerian Police Force to ensure security for all 23 LG secretariats.
