Borno Governor Zulum Announces Flood Relief Efforts, Dam Reconstruction, and Measures to Prevent Future Flooding

On Wednesday, Governor Professor Babagana Zulum of Borno State announced significant aid for displaced persons currently residing in the Bakassi IDP camp, located along Biu-Damboa Road in Maiduguri. During a donation event, He highlight that food and other essential items will be provided to the camp’s residents. Additionally, vendors have been hired to ensure the consistent distribution of meals.
Governor Zulum also disclosed that the Federal Government has allocated ₦3 billion in flood intervention funds to address the challenges posed by recent flooding. In response to this, the state government will establish a health committee to monitor and manage potential disease outbreaks, aiming to mitigate their impact and prevent widespread infection.
Governor Professor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announces that search and rescue operations have commenced across flood-affected communities to assess the number of lives lost. He also indicated that efforts to compile data on those impacted by the flooding will begin immediately.
Zulum attributed the severe flooding to unusually heavy rainfall this year. He noted that urban development in the state capital has obstructed traditional water channels, exacerbating the situation. Additionally, he cited the overflow of Alo Dam, which was influenced by the release of water from dams in Cameroon, as a contributing factor to the flooding.
Governor Professor Babagana Zulum announced plans to reconstruct the Alo Dam to increase its water containment capacity. Additionally, he stated that structures built in riverine and flood-prone areas will be demolished to prevent future flooding.
