Court Grants Cubana Chief Priest N10m Bail in Naira Abuse Case

In a recent development, the Federal High Court in Lagos State has granted Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, bail in the amount of N10 million with two sureties in like sum. This decision comes after the businessman and socialite pleaded not guilty to charges of tampering and abusing the nation’s currency during his trial.
Cubana Chief Priest stood before Justice Kehinde Ogundare facing three counts related to the abuse of the naira, allegedly spraying and tampering with the currency at a social event, which contravenes the Central Bank Act of 2007. The incident in question occurred on February 13, 2024, at Eko Hotel, where he was accused of spraying the naira while dancing.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Cubana Chief Priest was also alleged to have tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, spraying them for an extended period. The charges include incidents dating back to 2020 and January 2024.
This development follows the recent conviction of another public figure, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, on similar charges, resulting in a six-month imprisonment sentence. The EFCC, in its ongoing investigation, has disclosed its scrutiny of several celebrities for alleged abuse of naira notes, emphasizing its commitment to enforcing the law without favoritism.
