Presidency Criticizes Peter Obi Over Comments on Tragic Stampedes in Nigeria
The presidency has criticized Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, over his comments regarding the recent tragic stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja, which resulted in multiple fatalities, including those of children.
Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, took to X to respond to Obi’s remarks. Dare described Obi’s comments as indecent, accusing him of exploiting the misfortune of others for political gain. He stated, “When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi.”
Dare criticized Obi’s comments on the tragedies in Anambra and Oyo states, stating they lacked the dignity and responsibility expected from a statesman. He contrasted Obi’s approach with that of President Tinubu, who, upon hearing of the incidents, canceled all engagements, expressed profound sadness, and ordered an immediate investigation into the incidents. Dare emphasized that such responses reflect true leadership.
The tragic stampedes took place during events aimed at distributing food and palliatives. In Oyo State, 40 children died in a stampede at a children’s fair. In Abuja, 10 people were killed during a stampede at the distribution of rice and other aid at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama. Additionally, at least 17 people in Anambra’s Okija community died during a similar incident over rice palliatives.
Obi, in his reaction to the tragedies, criticized the systemic failures plaguing the nation, expressing his concern over the growing poverty despite Nigeria’s abundant resources and fertile land. He lamented that citizens were dying from hunger amid the nation’s wealth.
