Nigeria Police PRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi Condemns Online Cyberbullying, Calls it a Punishable Offence
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has condemned the practice of targeting individuals with direct curses online, describing it as cyberbullying and emphasizing that it is a punishable offence. In a post on X.com on Friday, Adejobi clarified that such behaviour goes beyond the bounds of free speech or legitimate criticism. He stated, “Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not expression of freedom or criticism. And cyberbullying, which is distinct from defamation, is a criminal offence and punishable. Be guided.”
Adejobi’s statement prompted reactions from social media users. Felix Abayomi, using the handle #felabayomi, questioned the definition of cyberbullying as a crime, stating, “When does raining curses become a crime? I look forward to the day someone will challenge these laws.” Another user, #kingkhone4real, sarcastically remarked, “If that were the case, then all Nigerians should have been in prison by now.”
On the other hand, #omoopee_ supported Adejobi’s position, affirming, “You are absolutely right, sir; raining curses and engaging in cyberbullying is not freedom of expression but an act of harm. We must all learn to express ourselves responsibly.”
