Yahaya Bello Threatens Legal Action Over Fake Report Linking Him to Attack on President Tinubu
The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has threatened legal action against an online platform, Daily Excessive, for publishing a report that allegedly linked him to an attack on President Bola Tinubu. The former governor, through his Media Director, Ohiare Michael, condemned the publication as both “mischievous” and “absolutely senseless.”
In a statement issued on Monday, Bello’s office addressed the fake report, which it claimed falsely attributed a fabricated quote to the former governor regarding President Tinubu. The statement dismissed the article as part of a deliberate attempt to create discord between the President and the former governor. It also criticized the credibility of the Daily Excessive blog, labeling it a “mushroom blog” and a source of “fake news.”
While acknowledging that they typically avoid responding to such unfounded reports, the statement emphasized the need for clarification to counter the spread of misinformation. “Ordinarily, we would not have bothered to give this any attention, as no informed Nigerian would take such a ridiculous story seriously,” the statement read. It further noted that court records are public documents and highlighted that Bello is currently in the early stages of legal proceedings with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), making such claims even more baseless.
Bello’s office also expressed frustration with what they described as a “desperate plot by irresponsible politicians” to strain the relationship between him and President Tinubu. The statement called the alleged attempt to create a rift between them a “laughable twist” and underscored that the report was misleading and the work of “unrelenting detractors.”
Additionally, the statement reiterated Bello’s unwavering support for President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that the former governor remains loyal to his party and committed to the progress of the nation.
