Edo State Government Lifts Suspension on Security Outfit, Renames It Edo State Security Corps

The Edo State Government has lifted the suspension on its state security outfit, previously known as the Edo State Security Network, and has renamed it the Edo State Security Corps. This decision was announced on Friday in a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua.
The security outfit was initially suspended by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in September 2024, ahead of the state’s gubernatorial election, based on the constitutional requirement that election security falls under the Nigeria Police Force, supported by other agencies within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Following the successful conduct of the September 21 gubernatorial election, the Edo State Government deemed it necessary to reinstate the security corps as part of its efforts to strengthen the state’s security framework and ensure public safety.
The statement from the government emphasized that all returning officers of the security outfit are now required to report to the office of the State Commander or their respective zonal offices (North, Central, South) for a smooth transition and effective deployment of the corps. This move is aimed at enhancing the state’s security and maintaining a safer environment for residents.
