Nigeria is Africa’s Most Viable Aviation Market, Says Minister Festus Keyamo

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has emphasized the country’s potential to become Africa’s leading aviation hub, citing its large population and significant air traffic as key advantages. He stated that Nigeria remains the most viable aviation market in Africa and stressed the importance of opening up the market to attract investors who can help improve the country’s aviation infrastructure.
Speaking on Nigeria’s strategic positioning, Keyamo explained that the country’s size and traffic make it the prime candidate to become the continent’s aviation hub. He highlighted the necessity of attracting investment to address the country’s infrastructure needs, noting that while Nigeria has yet to fully develop its aviation sector, it must begin promoting itself as an investment destination.
“We have the largest population, the largest traffic, and the best positioning in Africa,” Keyamo said. “It’s time for us to invite investors to come and contribute to the development of our aviation sector.”
Responding to questions about hosting an airshow despite the challenges in infrastructure, the minister acknowledged that Nigeria has not yet addressed all of its aviation infrastructure needs. However, he argued that the country must start advertising itself as an investment opportunity. Keyamo underscored the importance of private sector involvement, pointing out that government budgetary allocations alone cannot meet the extensive infrastructure requirements. He also noted that the Renewed Hope Fund, established by President Bola Tinubu, will provide counterpart funding for some major projects, though not full financing.
An airshow, Keyamo explained, serves as an important platform to showcase the country to potential investors. “Nigeria has never hosted an airshow before,” he said. “This event will provide an opportunity for international investors to see what Nigeria has to offer in terms of the aviation industry.”
Addressing Airport Harassment Concerns
In addition to his remarks on infrastructure, Minister Keyamo expressed concern over reports of harassment by security operatives at Nigerian airports. He revealed that the aviation ministry has raised the issue with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, in an effort to address the growing number of complaints from passengers.
“We are aware of the harassment some passengers are facing at our airports,” Keyamo said. “It’s not an issue with the aviation sector itself or with me personally. We have been in contact with the National Security Adviser to address this issue.”
Keyamo further clarified that the reported incidents of harassment often involve personnel from other agencies and are not directly linked to the Ministry of Aviation. He assured the public that the NSA has taken steps to improve oversight, including the acquisition of 1,000 body cameras for security personnel to monitor their activities at airports.
The Minister’s remarks reflect ongoing efforts to improve both the infrastructure and security of Nigeria’s aviation sector, as the country seeks to solidify its position as a key player in the African aviation market.
