Russian Engineer Sentenced to 16 Years for High Treason Over Leaking Military Secrets to Ukraine

1 min read

A Russian engineer employed at one of the country’s leading tank manufacturers has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for high treason after being convicted of passing military secrets to Ukraine. Daniel Mukhametov, 32, worked at Uralvagonzavod, located in Nizhny Tagil in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region, one of the world’s largest tank production facilities.

Mukhametov and his wife, Viktoria, who also worked at Uralvagonzavod, were arrested by the Federal Security Service (FSB) in 2023. They were accused of providing Ukrainian intelligence with sensitive military and technical information related to Russia’s defense capabilities.

Mukhametov reportedly “partially admitted his guilt” during the trial. His wife, Viktoria Mukhametova, was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for her role in the case, with her sentence handed down earlier in October.

This case forms part of a broader wave of espionage investigations that Russia has launched since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In addition to espionage charges, many individuals have been detained or subjected to fines for opposing Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
