FRSC Corps Marshal Calls for Unified Effort to Tackle Road Accidents, Launches Intensive Safety Campaign

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Shehu Mohammed, has emphasized the need for a collective approach to address the rising number of road accidents in Nigeria, particularly during the high-risk ’ember months.’ In a bid to curb these incidents, he launched an intensified road safety campaign that calls for cooperation from all sectors of society, highlighting that road safety is a shared responsibility.
Speaking at a two-day workshop for FRSC management staff in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed pointed out that road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among young people both globally and in Nigeria. He underscored the critical importance of addressing this issue, as Nigeria, with its large youthful population, faces the prospect of significant losses if road safety conditions are not improved.
“Road traffic crashes are the number one cause of death among youth. If we do not take collective action to reduce these accidents, we are putting the future of our young people—and by extension, the nation—at risk,” said Mohammed. “Every stakeholder, from government officials to vehicle manufacturers, engineers, and road users, must play a role in making our roads safer.”
The campaign, themed “Retooling FRSC for Organisational Effectiveness from Policy Formulation to Strategic Implementation,” focuses on multiple initiatives to tackle the road safety crisis. These include enforcing stricter traffic laws, enhancing public awareness, and fostering a culture of responsibility among all road users.
ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC Public Education Officer, highlighted that this year’s campaign is particularly significant due to its focus on passenger rights. “For the first time, we are not only educating drivers but also empowering passengers to speak out against reckless driving. Passengers must be aware of their rights and take an active role in ensuring their own safety,” Ogungbemide explained.
In addition to traditional awareness methods, the FRSC’s expanded outreach efforts will include large-scale town hall meetings, motorcades, and stops at transit camps across the country. These initiatives are designed to engage road users directly and promote a culture of safety on Nigerian roads.
The Corps Marshal’s call for a unified approach underscores the urgent need for concerted action from all sectors to reverse the growing trend of road traffic fatalities, particularly among Nigeria’s youth.
