Osoba and Ganduje Address Trust Issues in Deputy Leadership at Forum of Former Deputy Governors

At the 3rd Annual Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja, former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba highlighted a significant challenge in political leadership: the suspicion and lack of trust that often prevent presidents and governors from effectively transferring power to their deputies.
Osoba noted that this issue is not unique to Nigeria, referencing the historical political tensions between former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and President Bill Clinton. He remarked, “It is unfortunate. This is a global issue, not limited to Africa. Rarely do deputies succeed their bosses.” However, he expressed hope that Nigeria’s younger leaders, as showcased at the conference, would eventually rise to presidential positions.
He also lamented the frequent impeachment plots against deputies by governors, suggesting that constitutional amendments to protect deputies are unlikely to succeed due to the political dynamics at play. “If the State House of Assembly is aligned with the governor, he can easily impeach his deputy. Building relationships is key,” he advised.
Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, added that the topic of deputy leadership remains controversial, even invoking a theological perspective by humorously noting that even God did not have a deputy during creation. Ganduje acknowledged that while the concept of deputy leadership is contentious, it is essential for continuity in governance. He expressed optimism that ongoing discussions could eventually lead to a constitutional review that might enhance the roles and protections for deputy leaders.
