TOOAN Launches Educational Campaign on CNG Benefits and Safety for Tricycle Operators in Lagos

Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN), Lagos State Chapter, is embarking on an extensive educational campaign aimed at informing its members about the numerous benefits and critical safety precautions associated with the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a fuel alternative. This initiative is in response to the escalating costs of petrol and the pressing need for safer, more economical modes of transportation.
Zonal Chairman Alhaji Azeez Istijabah emphasized the urgency of implementing necessary safety measures during a recent meeting. He pointed out that while CNG presents significant economic advantages—such as lower fuel costs and reduced emissions—it also requires operators to be vigilant. “Operators must be aware of the inherent risks associated with gas,” he said. “It’s essential to avoid smoking or working near open flames, as CNG is highly flammable. We must prioritize safety in our operations.”
In addition to the safety protocols, Istijabah highlighted the importance of adhering to passenger limits to ensure stability and safety while operating tricycles. He urged all members to limit their passenger count to three and strictly prohibit anyone from occupying the front seat. “Overloading tricycles not only compromises safety but can also lead to mechanical failures and accidents,” he warned.
Mr. AbdulAkeem Sabiu, the association’s branch chairman in Abule-Egba, shared his optimistic perspective regarding the transition to CNG. He articulated that this shift could significantly reduce the financial burdens that operators are currently facing, especially in light of the ongoing increase in petrol prices. “The federal government’s initiative to introduce CNG tricycles is a welcome development. It is a step towards a more sustainable and affordable transportation solution that will ultimately benefit both the transporters and the commuting public,” Sabiu noted.
Furthermore, Sabiu raised concerns about the accessibility of refilling stations, which are crucial for the successful implementation of this initiative. He pointed out existing restrictions that prevent tricycles from operating in areas where these refilling stations are located, such as Agidingbi. “This creates a logistical challenge for our members,” he explained. “We need the federal and Lagos State governments to collaborate and establish more CNG refilling stations that are easily accessible for commercial tricycles. It’s vital that these facilities are strategically located to ensure that operators can refill their vehicles without disrupting their service.”
The association’s leadership is also advocating for increased public awareness regarding the benefits of CNG and the importance of safety measures. They are planning workshops and training sessions to ensure that all operators are well-informed and can safely transition to using CNG.
As the transportation landscape in Lagos continues to evolve, the commitment of TOOAN to educate its members about CNG not only aims to enhance safety but also seeks to foster a more sustainable and economically viable future for tricycle operators across the state. By addressing these issues collaboratively with government authorities, they hope to create an environment where both operators and commuters can thrive.
