Nigerian Defence Headquarters Warns Against Calls for Military Coup, Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria has issued a strong warning against calls for a military coup, labeling such actions as treasonable under the law. This statement, made by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, follows the circulation of a viral video in which individuals were seen advocating for a military takeover due to grievances.

The DHQ clarified that there has been no appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to replace Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently on his annual leave. The statement emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) operates under constitutional guidelines, and Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim is handling routine briefs in Lagbaja’s absence.

The military urged those spreading false information to cease immediately, assuring the public that the COAS is in good health and will return to duty shortly. It reiterated its commitment to upholding democracy and supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Furthermore, the DHQ called on media organizations to verify information with official sources to avoid disseminating misinformation. The military remains focused on its role in maintaining national security and peace, bolstered by the President’s support and the dedication of military leadership.
