Nigeria Customs Service Enhances Border Security and Revenue Generation with Technology and New Aircraft

During an appraisal visit to the Ogun Area II Command in Abeokuta, Saidu Yusuf, the Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service for the Southwest Zone, emphasized the agency’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved border control and effective smuggling prevention.
Yusuf praised the Ogun Area II Command for generating over N20 billion in revenue for the Federal Government from January to August, significantly up from N14 billion during the same period last year.
He noted that ongoing efforts are focused on enhancing border security and patrol through technological advancements. Yusuf highlighted the initiatives of the Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, who has been working diligently to automate operations at both borders and seaports over the past year.
Saidu Yusuf, the Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service for the Southwest Zone, recently mentioned the procurement of an aircraft intended for border patrol. He noted that this development follows an inspection by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) last week.
Yusuf acknowledged the challenges posed by the porous nature of the borders and emphasized that modern technology is essential for effective monitoring. He highlighted that alongside the acquisition of advanced tools like the aircraft, the service is committed to ongoing training and retraining of personnel to ensure effective use of these technologies.

He urged potential offenders to reconsider, stating that the Nigeria Customs Service, under its current leadership, is highly active and effective in intelligence gathering, working closely with other security agencies.

He noted that as of August, the command had generated over N20 billion, approaching N21 billion, compared to N14 billion during the same period last year. Yusuf acknowledged the challenges posed by the country’s economic situation and exchange rates but praised the command’s impressive results.
In response, Comptroller Alade expressed gratitude for Yusuf’s recognition and commendation. He also appealed for improved accommodations for officers at the command and requested that the command’s clinic be equipped with essential medical supplies.
