Dr. Julius Oni Returns to Nigeria After 25 Years, Launches DOC Medical Nigeria to Transform Orthopaedic Care

2 min read

Dr. Julius Oni, an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, has returned to Nigeria after 25 years in the United States. In a viral video, he explained his decision, saying, “I reverse Japa from the U.S. to Nigeria 6 weeks ago,” using the Nigerian term ‘Japa,’ which means to emigrate in search of better opportunities.

Oni took a leave of absence from his position at Johns Hopkins, sold his house and cars, and relocated with his wife and children. He aims to transform healthcare and provide quality orthopaedic care to Nigerians upon his return to his home country.

Dr. Julius Oni acknowledged that his decision to return to Nigeria might seem baffling to some. “I know at this point some of you may call me delusional or even crazy, but I’m neither. I’m just a man full of conviction,” he stated.

As the CEO of XCITE Capital, a private equity firm, Oni emphasized that his move was fueled by a strong belief that Nigerians deserve access to world-class healthcare.

Dr. Julius Oni expressed his belief that Nigerian patients deserve exceptional care, stating, “I happen to believe that Nigerian patients deserve great care too.” To support this mission, he has launched DOC Medical Nigeria, a facility dedicated to providing high-quality musculoskeletal care.

Oni aims to ensure that patients do not need to travel abroad for quality orthopaedic surgery, explaining, “Part of my effort is to provide access to care.” He proudly noted that his initiatives are already bearing fruit, with patients traveling from nearby Ghana and as far as the UK for treatment, as many now have access to top-tier orthopaedic care within Nigeria.

On his Instagram, Oni shared some recent achievements since opening DOC Medical Nigeria, including performing his first series of surgeries and hosting free medical clinics in collaboration with various organizations. He also mentioned consulting with patients outside Nigeria.
