NAFDAC Closes Gomboru Drug Market Amid Flood Crisis in Maiduguri, Borno State; Over 30 Dead and 400,000 Displaced

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State, due to the discovery of contaminated drugs that were washed and sun-dried for resale following the recent devastating floods in the area.
NAFDAC has announced the closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri following significant flooding that submerged the area and contaminated the drugs. In a statement on their X handle, they noted that the flooding washed and sun-dried the compromised drugs for resale. The Director General of NAFDAC ordered an immediate shop-to-shop removal of these unsafe products.
The flooding, caused by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Maiduguri, has tragically resulted in at least 30 deaths and displaced around 400,000 people from their homes.
The devastating flood in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, has led to a reported death toll of 30, according to Ezekiel Manzo, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Water from an overflowing dam has swept away thousands of homes, leaving the situation in the city “quite frightening,” as described by NEMA colleague Zubaida Umar.
Currently, around 40 percent of Maiduguri is inundated, with officials estimating that 414,000 people have been displaced. Umar warned that this number could rise to as high as one million as the crisis continues to unfold.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that over 23,000 households and more than 150,000 people have been affected by the rapid rise of floodwaters in Maiduguri.
In a further development, at least 286 inmates have escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre due to the severe flooding.
Additionally, NEMA indicated that about 80 percent of the animals in the local zoo have perished, while 20 percent have escaped into the surrounding city.
