Akwa Ibom State Electoral Commission Finalizes Preparations for October 5 Elections

Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, announced that 12 political parties will participate in the local government elections set for October 5. During a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, Ikoiwak detailed that these 12 parties have completed their nominations by submitting the names of their candidates and returning their nomination forms.

Ikoiwak explained that the commission has maintained a positive working relationship with the political parties throughout the preparation process. Initially, the commission engaged with 19 political parties; however, only 12 of them have finalized their candidate submissions and form returns. This update reflects a significant milestone in the electoral preparation, demonstrating a structured approach to managing the election process.

Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, has revealed that extensive security arrangements have been finalized for the upcoming local government elections on October 5. A total of 14,000 security personnel will be deployed to oversee the elections across 4,353 polling units and 369 wards within the 31 local government areas of the state.

Ikoiwak attributed this robust security measure to the efforts of the commission’s Consultative Committee Meeting on Election Security, which includes the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State and other senior security officials. This committee has played a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive security coverage for the election.

Additionally, Ikoiwak provided an update on the recruitment of ad-hoc staff for the election. The commission has received over 17,000 applications from individuals interested in working as election staff. However, after a thorough screening process, the commission plans to engage between 12,000 and 13,000 of these applicants to assist with the electoral duties.
