2 min read

Staff members at ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, were hospitalized in Singapore due to a food poisoning outbreak that occurred on Tuesday. A total of 60 people experienced symptoms of gastroenteritis, with 57 requiring hospital treatment, according to reports from BBC News.

Health and food safety authorities are currently investigating the cause of the outbreak. ByteDance has responded to the incident through a spokesperson, affirming their serious approach to employee health and safety. The spokesperson stated, “We take the health and safety of our employees very seriously and have promptly provided support to all affected individuals. This includes collaborating with emergency services to ensure they receive necessary care. We are actively investigating the matter and cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.”

Dozens of ByteDance staff in Singapore were hospitalized following a food poisoning outbreak on Tuesday. The company relies on third-party caterers for meals and doesn’t prepare food onsite. Seventeen ambulances were dispatched to their office building in the business district to aid affected individuals.

The Singapore Food Agency, working with the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of food safety practices, stating, “Food operators must adhere to good food safety practices. SFA will take enforcement action against any food operators found to be non-compliant.”

ByteDance, established in 2012 by Chinese entrepreneurs, initially achieved significant success with the short video app Douyin in China. The following year, the company launched TikTok as an international version of Douyin. TikTok, though unavailable in China, has grown to encompass over a billion active users globally.

Operated through a limited liability company headquartered in Singapore and Los Angeles, ByteDance ultimately retains ownership of the company.
