“Customs Chief Announces Import Duty Suspension on Food Staples, Pledges Economic Stimulus and Border Security Enhancement”

The Nigerian government, through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has temporarily suspended import duties on crucial food items such as rice, flour, wheat, and others. This decision aims to reduce the high costs of these essential goods and alleviate widespread hunger across the country. By removing import duties, the government hopes to make these staple foods more affordable and accessible to Nigerian citizens, especially amidst economic challenges and food shortages. This measure is part of broader efforts to address food insecurity and provide immediate relief to the population facing economic hardships.

 

Yesterday, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, announced that the Nigerian government is taking steps to address the escalating prices of essential food items, with the goal of alleviating hunger in the country. He emphasized the government’s commitment to making these staple foods more affordable and accessible to the population as part of its efforts to tackle food insecurity.

According to Him , the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, global inflation is affecting nations worldwide, including Nigeria. To mitigate the impact on essential food items, the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, has decided to suspend import duties and taxes. This measure aims to make these items more affordable and accessible, addressing the pressing issue of hunger within the nation.

 

Mr. Adeniyi emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing these measures efficiently. They have streamlined export processes and introduced initiatives like the Advanced Ruling System, Authorized Economic Operator status, and Time Release Study to enhance trade, boost the economy, and create opportunities. These efforts are designed to facilitate Nigerian goods reaching international markets more effectively, benefiting farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs and their communities.

 

Furthermore, he highlighted ongoing efforts with other agencies to prevent the illegal importation of arms and other dangerous weapons through Nigeria’s borders. Emphasizing the importance of collective effort and peaceful progress, Mr. Adeniyi called for unity, resilience, and cooperation from all Nigerians during these challenging times. He expressed gratitude to those engaging constructively and emphasized that their cooperation is crucial in overcoming current challenges and building a brighter future for the nation.
