Military Issues Stern Warning Against Violence Ahead of Nationwide August Demonstration
Department of Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a warning regarding potential targeting of smartphone users and car owners during a planned protest. This implies a cautionary advisory aimed at these specific groups, possibly indicating vulnerability or risk associated with their participation or presence in the protest
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Thursday that it has discovered a plan by troublemakers to target car owners, landlords, and smartphone users during next month’s scheduled ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, warned that unscrupulous elements have already been detected attempting to hijack the planned protest for violent purposes. He emphasized that many are unwittingly following these individuals.
“For example, there are indications that individuals owning smartphones, cars, shops, houses, or using air conditioning at home have been identified as potential targets.”
He cautioned against any violence during the upcoming nationwide demonstration and suggested that the organizers aim to emulate the recent protest in Kenya, which escalated into chaos.
General Buba emphasized that while citizens have the right to express their grievances, the military will not tolerate any form of violent gatherings or protests.
The police sent a caution to the public and organizers alike, highlighting the authorities’ stance against any form of protest that may escalate into violence. It suggests a preemptive measure to maintain public order and safety during the upcoming month.
“President Bola Tinubu, governors, and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have urged Nigerians to postpone the scheduled ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest next month.”
Scheduled for August, The nationwide protest against economic hardship, gaining traction on social media, will encompass all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The organizers, who remain anonymous, have orchestrated the event.
Prices of food and essential commodities in Nigeria have sharply risen, exacerbating one of the country’s most severe inflation and economic crises. These challenges have been precipitated by the government’s decisions to remove petrol subsidies and unify forex windows.
