Fuel Crisis Deepens as Petrol Shortage Hits Nigeria Hard

Amidst the ongoing fuel crisis in Nigeria, exacerbated by logistical issues and prioritization of fuel distribution to Abuja, the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) continues to worsen. Despite assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that logistical challenges were being addressed, filling stations across Lagos and other parts of the country remained closed over the weekend, leaving citizens grappling with long queues and skyrocketing prices.

NNPCL directives instructing depots to prioritize fuel truck loading for the Federal Capital Territory have resulted in a significant diversion of fuel away from regions like Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Osun. This diversion has caused frustration among both officials and marketers, who anticipate lingering queues and scarcity for several days.

The scarcity is further compounded by rationing measures implemented by the NNPCL, reducing fuel allocations to depots by half. The erratic supply is attributed to the national energy company’s challenges in importing sufficient fuel, leading to disruptions in distribution.

While the NNPCL denies claims of deliberately rationing fuel and prioritizing Abuja, the reality on the ground paints a different picture. The scarcity has led to soaring prices, with black market activities thriving and motorists bearing the brunt of exorbitant costs.

In addition to urban centers like Lagos and Abuja, the fuel shortage has spread to border communities and neighboring states, exacerbating transportation challenges and hindering economic activities.

Efforts to mitigate the crisis include the resumption of loading activities at key jetties in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri. However, logistical constraints persist, prolonging the timeline for normalizing fuel distribution across the country.

As citizens endure long queues, inflated prices, and disruptions to daily life, the government faces mounting pressure to address the root causes of the fuel crisis and provide relief to the embattled populace.
