The Federal High Court in Lagos delivered a significant judgment on Friday, sentencing the controversial figure, Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison with no option of a fine for his involvement in naira abuse.
During the sentencing, Justice Abimbola Awogboro highlighted the deterrent effect of the verdict, aiming to dissuade others from similar acts of currency mutilation.
Before the pronouncement of the sentence, the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly asserted his identity as a man.
The commencement of the prison term was set for March 24, 2024, coinciding with the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
The conviction stemmed from Bobrisky’s guilty plea to the charge of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, resulting in his sentencing being postponed to Tuesday, April 9, 2024, due to a public holiday.
Following his conviction, Bobrisky implored the court for leniency, citing his lack of awareness regarding the law surrounding naira abuse. Despite his appeal and acknowledgment of regret, the judge reiterated that ignorance of the law cannot justify the offense.
Expressing remorse, Bobrisky proposed utilizing his substantial social media influence, boasting over five million followers, to educate the public about responsible monetary behavior, seeking a chance for redemption through advocacy and awareness efforts.
