SSANU and NASU Commence Nationwide Strike, Disrupting University Operations

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have initiated a nationwide strike on Monday, causing disruptions to university activities. The strike action comes as a response to alleged unfair treatment and salary disparities imposed by the Federal Government.
Last week, the unions issued a threat to shut down university hostels and power supplies if the government failed to address their grievances by March 18, 2024. According to Muhammed Ibrahim, the National President of SSANU, members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars, have not received arrears from 2022.
Despite the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, claiming unawareness of the planned strike, Ibrahim confirmed its commencement during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Show. He stated that workers in various university departments, including registry, bursary, maintenance, security, and student affairs, have withdrawn their services, resulting in a standstill in university administrations nationwide.
Expressing disappointment in the government’s lack of communication and compliance, Ibrahim highlighted the failure of government representatives, including the Minister of Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, to reach out to the unions. He emphasized that the unions would take further action if their demands were not met after the seven-day warning strike.
The unions remain resolute in their demands and readiness to escalate their protest should the government fail to address their concerns promptly.
