ICAO Security Experts Conduct Comprehensive Audits of Nigeria’s Key Airports.

A team of experts from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the global regulatory body for the aviation industry, has commenced security audits at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The 2024 ICAO Universal Security Audit Programme through Continuous Monitoring Approach (USAP CMA) will scrutinize critical aviation security aspects, including Inflight Security, Passenger and Baggage Security, Acts of Unlawful Interference, Facilitation, Legislation, Training, Quality Control Function, Operations, and Cargo, Mail, and Catering.
The audit, scheduled to conclude on March 22, 2024, is part of a concerted effort to maintain the highest security standards in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, highlighted the significance of the audit in fortifying defenses against evolving threats and vulnerabilities. Nigeria aims to uphold these standards through rigorous assessments, comprehensive evaluations, and collaborative partnerships.
The four-member ICAO audit team, led by Callum Vine, includes James Mabala, Tebogo Mphela, and Alagie Jeng. Acting Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Chris Najomo, welcomed the auditors and outlined the objectives of the USAP CMA. The audit aims to enhance global aviation security by assessing the effective implementation of critical elements in member states’ aviation security oversight systems. It also evaluates compliance with ICAO’s Annex 9 and 17, focusing on Facilitation and AVSEC standards outlined in the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, have been chosen for on-site verification of security measures during the auditing process. Najomo expressed confidence in Nigeria’s improved security measures since the last audit, assuring the ICAO of maximum cooperation for a seamless exercise. He emphasized the commitment of the current administration to ensuring secure, safe, and efficient air transportation in Nigeria, expressing optimism that Nigeria would surpass its previous rating with the transformative changes in the industry. Najomo pledged full support and cooperation to ensure a smooth and successful audit process.
